Is Jagua different from Black Henna?
Jagua Henna is NOT black henna. Please be aware of black Henna products! These products are made of traditional henna mixed with the chemical substance ParaPhenyleneDiamine (PPD). This PPD polluted henna is dangerous and can cause blisters and scars. Do not use these products!

About Jagua
What is Jagua exactly?
How does Jagua work?
Where does Jagua come from?
Our fresh Jagua fruits are sustainably collected in Colombia by working with local farmers. Our farmers never used jagua before but can now enjoy an extra income.
Our first acquaintance with Jagua took place deep in the Amazonian rainforests. Local tribes shared their stories and traditions and told us about the importance of Jagua during their daily lives. Each tribe has his own methods of creating Jagua tattoos with which they create intricate patterns for ceremonies and parties. They’ve used the Jagua fruits for hundreds of years and passed on their knowledge from generation to generation.
How is Jagua different from ‘traditional’ henna?
Differences between 'traditional' Henna and Jagua Henna are:
- Traditional Henna will dye the skin red/brown while Jagua Henna will dye the skin dark blue/black.
- There is no such thing as safe black 'traditional' Henna but Jagua Henna can safely provide a blue/black color.
- Traditional Henna has been used for centuries throughout the Middle-East and Asia.
- Jagua has been used for centuries by the local tribes of Central and South America.
What’s the difference between Jagua gel & ink?
Jagua gel is an EC 1223/2009 certified, ready-made product which you can apply directly to the skin and gives you a stable result. Jagua ink is freshly squeezed juice of the Genipa Americana fruit. Its consistency is like water which makes it unsuitable to be applied directly to the skin. With Jagua juice / ink you can create your own Jagua products. Use it to mix your own Jagua gel or Hengua paste, boost your stain, create a consistency of your liking or alter your colour.
We offer several sizes of Jagua gels and Jagua ink (juice).
How do Jagua products stain the skin?
The colourless Jagua juice (Genipa Americana) oxidizes when exposed to air. This oxidation process is the reason that your skin can gradually darken. Therefore, when our tattoo gel touches the skin for ~2.5 hours, it will take 12 to 24 hours before the tattoo will reach its most intense colour.
What tattoo colour does Jagua give?
Jagua dyes the skin black with a hint of dark blue. The exact colour depends on your specific skin type.

If you are an experienced henna artist, please use your standard henna paste recipe and experiment by replacing henna powder with Jagua powder. We recommend to start with a 50% Jagua powder 50% henna powder formula and alter by adding less or more Jagua powder for different staining effects.
This recipe gives you approximately 100 grams (100ml) of hengua paste.
Ingredients:
- 12.5g Jagua powder
- 12.5g henna powder
- 67.5g water
- 7.5g essential oil (lavender, eucalyptus or squalene)
- 10g sugar
How to mix:
- Add Jagua and henna powder to a mixing bowl
- Add water while mixing thoroughly
- Add essential oil while mixing thoroughly
- Add sugar when you are living in a dry heat setting, do not add if you are in a humid setting
- Mix thoroughly and let the formula settle for at least 12 – 24 hours. Please note: The time for Henna powder to release its dye depends. Please see tips below.
- Mix thoroughly again to remove any lumps. Strain your Hengua paste through a stalking if needed
- Now you can put your Jagua paste in an applicator bottle or a cone.
General tips
- Always use top quality essential oils and henna powder to ensure a good stain.
- It also depends per henna powder when its dye will be released. As every henna powder has its own properties, please work with henna powder that you are familiar with so you know how long it takes for it to release its dye.
- We recommend you to add less or more Henna Powder to get different staining effects.
- For Hengua paste using our Jagua Powder, we recommend to remove the Hengua paste by peeling it of the skin. It takes 24 to 48 hours for Hengua to reach its most intense stain. Avoid contact with water in the meantime.
