How to Create a Temporary Tattoo with Jagua

Jagua tattoos have become popular for their natural blue-black stain that resembles a real tattoo. This step-by-step guide will take you through everything you need to know—from choosing your product to advanced tips—so you can create your own temporary tattoo with confidence and precision.

1. Choose Your Jagua Product

Before starting, decide which Jagua product you want to work with:

1.     Jagua powder or juice – You’ll need to mix it into your own paste before applying. For detailed instructions, see our guides: [How to use Jagua powder] or [How to use Jagua juice].

2.     Ready-to-use Jagua gel – This comes in pouches or tubes:

    • Gel pouch: Transfer the gel into a cone or dispensing bottle. See our guide: [How to transfer gel into cones or dispensing bottles].
    • Gel tube: Ready to use immediately. For extra tips, see [How to work with a Jagua gel tube].

2. Gather Your Necessary and Optional Items

Necessary:

  • Jagua gel tube or your prepared Jagua mixture
  • Paper towels or cotton swabs (for correcting small mistakes)
  • Disinfecting gel (to clean the skin beforehand)

Optional:

  • Transfer paper (to help transfer design)
  • Nitrile gloves (to protect your hands from stains)
  • Mefix tape (to protect the tattoo after application)

3. Create Your Design

  1. Decide on your design. Experienced users can draw freehand.
  2. For guidance, draw your design on transfer paper:
    • Use the smooth side of the paper and a non-toxic pen.
    • Place the paper ink-side down onto clean, dry skin.
    • Dampen the back slightly with water using a sponge or cloth.
    • Peel back the paper to reveal the design on the skin.

3.     Follow the outline with Jagua gel or mixture, filling in details as needed.

4. Prepare Your Jagua

1.     Gel tube:

    • Remove the cap and seal.
    • Attach the needle applicator.

2.     Powder or juice mixture:

    • Follow our guides to create your own gel from powder or juice.
    • Prepare your applicator with fresh Jagua paste.

5. Clean and Prep Your Skin

    • Wash the skin area thoroughly to remove dirt, oils, or lotion.
    • Pat dry.
    • Avoid cuts or open wounds to prevent irritation.

6. Apply the Jagua Paste

  • Carefully apply the paste onto your skin following your design.
  • Take your time to get comfortable with the amount of pressure needed.
  • You can practice on paper first or use stencils/templates if you like.

7. Let Your Tattoo Dry

  • Allow the Jagua paste to dry completely (usually up to 1 hour).
  • Once dry, you can apply a piece of Mefix tape over the tattoo. Jagua can naturally start peeling or flaking off the skin after a while. The tape helps keep the design in place longer and protects it from rubbing off prematurely.
  • Leave it on the skin for at least 2.5 hours, up to 4 hours for a darker stain.
  •  Remove or peel off the gel before going to bed to avoid smudging.

8. Remove the Jagua

  • Gently peel off the dried gel or rinse it away with water.
  • Initially, you’ll see a light print of the tattooed area.

9. Let Your Tattoo Develop

  • The color will deepen over 12–24 hours to reach its full blue-black intensity.

Advanced Tips

Drawing Shaded Tattoos:

  • Apply more Jagua in areas you want darker
  • Use a thinner layer or gently blot some for lighter shades.
  • Blend edges with a Q-tip or fine brush for gradient effects.

Layering Tattoos:

  • For depth, let the first layer dry slightly, then add more Jagua to certain areas for a 3D effect.

Fixing Mistakes:

  • Remove mistakes immediately using a paper towel, disinfectant, and a cotton swab.
  • Clean the area completely; Jagua can stain even with subtle contact.

How to Protect Your Jagua Tattoo

  • Avoid friction and scrubbing.
  • Gently pat dry after showering or swimming.
  • Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly while bathing, showering, sleeping, or swimming.
  • Protect from sun exposure with sunscreen.
  • Keep skin hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
