It all starts with the Genipa Americana tree, growing naturally in the rainforests of Colombia. These trees produce fruits that contain Genipin, a natural dye responsible for the deep blue-black stains we know and love.

For a long time, these trees were cut down, their true potential unseen. As interest in jagua began to grow, so did the opportunities for local farmers, bringing better incomes and a shift toward more sustainable ways of working with the land.

At the heart of this is our colleague Dahiana, who works closely with the farmers as a true partner. Together they study the trees, share knowledge, and look for ways to keep improving. Their common goal: sourcing the finest jagua fruits possible, because great fruit is where every great tattoo begins.

When the fresh fruits arrive at our Colombian factory, they undergo a cleaning process to remove any impurities. The fruits are sliced and arranged on trays, entering the dehydration ovens. After this process, they are inspected and any low-quality pieces are removed.

Next, the fruits are ground into a fine powder and sterilized with UV lights to remove any microbiological loads. Throughout this process, multiple quality checks are done to ensure consistency in delivering the darkest stain possible, every time. Once approved, the product is packaged and shipped to the Netherlands.

In the Netherlands, we further process our products to create jagua gel with the texture that you love: smooth, easy to apply, and the right thickness. All while being compliant with European cosmetic regulations (EC1223/2009).

We have already made great steps with textile dyeing, achieving deep dark blue colors on various textile fibres, and we even managed to achieve some other colour ranges: from purples to almost black.
