Congratulations on creating a beautiful Jagua tattoo! To keep your design looking dark, sharp, and long-lasting, proper aftercare is essential. In this guide, we explain how Jagua works and what you can do to enjoy your tattoo for as long as possible.

How Jagua works over time

Jagua does not work like regular ink. After application, the gel penetrates the outer layer of your skin (the epidermis). At first, the design is almost invisible. Over the next 12 to 24 hours, the dye reacts with oxygen (oxidation), gradually turning into a deep blue-black colour.

Jagua tattoos are temporary and will naturally fade as your skin renews itself. On average, a well-cared-for tattoo lasts up to two weeks. This can vary depending on your skin type, the placement of the tattoo, and your daily activities.

1. Care Directly After Application

The first hours after applying Jagua are the most important for achieving a strong stain.

  1. Allow the Jagua gel to dry completely.
  2. Leave the gel on the skin for at least 2 hours. Leaving it on longer (up to 4 hours) can result in a darker stain.
  3. Avoid touching, scratching, or exposing the area to moisture, as this can cause smudging.
  4. After the setting time, gently rinse off the gel with water.
  5. Let the colour develop over the next 12–24 hours.

2. Use High-Quality Jagua

The quality of Jagua has a big impact on the final result.

Fresh, high-quality Jagua contains more active dye molecules, resulting in a darker and longer-lasting stain. If Jagua is stored incorrectly or used after a long period, it can lose its potency, leading to lighter tattoos that fade more quickly.

For storage tips, see our guide: [How to store Jagua the right way]

3. Choose the Right Placement

Where you place your tattoo affects both the colour and how long it lasts.

Areas with thinner skin, such as hands or feet, often develop a darker stain. However, these areas also regenerate faster and are exposed to more washing and friction, which can cause the tattoo to fade quicker.

Areas with thicker skin, like the upper arms or legs, may result in a slightly lighter stain but often last longer.

4. Apply Your Tattoo Correctly

A well-applied tattoo will always last longer.

Making sure the Jagua stays on the skin long enough and is applied evenly helps the dye fully absorb into the skin. If you want to improve your results, follow our full guide: [How to create a Temporary Tattoo with Jagua]

5. Provide Proper Aftercare

After the tattoo has developed, good aftercare will help maintain its colour and sharpness.

1.     Moisturize regularly
Keeping your skin hydrated helps slow down exfoliation. Dry skin fades faster, so use a gentle moisturizer without alcohol or harsh ingredients.

2.     Avoid exfoliation
Scrubs and exfoliating tools remove the top layer of skin, causing the tattoo to fade more quickly.

3.     Protect against the sun
UV exposure can break down the Jagua dye. Apply sunscreen or cover the tattoo when spending time in the sun.

4.     Avoid harsh chemicals
Products with alcohol or strong ingredients can accelerate fading. Chlorinated water, such as in swimming pools, can also reduce the lifespan of your tattoo.

5.     Limit friction
Friction from clothing, towels, workouts, or scratching can cause the tattoo to fade faster. While it’s impossible to avoid completely, being mindful helps extend its lifespan.

6.     Touch up if needed
If your tattoo starts to fade but you still want to keep the design, you can go over it again. The result may not be as strong as the first application, but it can refresh the look. However, if you have a sensitive skin, we don't advise to go over it again.

Final Note

Even with the best care, Jagua tattoos will always fade over time. This is part of what makes them unique. With the right preparation and aftercare, you can enjoy your design at its best for as long as possible.
